Reform Update - S.11 to be Jump-Started This Fall
Medical liability reform took a July detour with the U.S. Senate's failure to gather enough votes to advance S.11, the Patients First Act of 2003. Still, it's clear that the battle for medical liability reform (including a cap on non-economic damages of $250,000) is far from over. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, M.D., has vowed to bring the measure front and center this fall. At a grassroots level, proponents of medical liability reform continue to build support across the country. Illinois Senator Fitzgerald is a proponent and co-sponsor of S.11. Senator Durbin voted against the measure.
Although the road to reform is a challenge to navigate, ISMIE will continue to advocate for S.11, monitor its progress and report future developments. Policyholders are encouraged to be involved advocates, too, by contacting Senators Durbin and Fitzgerald.
