Dubious Honor

A report put out by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), "Medical Malpractice Insurance Net Premium and Incurred Loss Summary," lists the state of Illinois in the number three position for direct losses incurred (for 2001).

The report defines "direct losses incurred" as losses that have occurred within a stipulated time period whether paid or not (does not include loss adjustment expenses and defense cost containment expenses incurred).

By the numbers:

  1. NY $873,281,355
  2. FL $680,903,225
  3. IL $480,966,371
  4. PA $464,736,398
  5. CA $414,623,817

With losses like this, no wonder Illinois medical malpractice rates are skyrocketing!

The summary is part of the NAIC Annual Statement, Exhibit of Premium and Losses. The report highlights medical malpractice insurance premiums and losses by state in the U.S. from 1991 to 2001.
