Free Retirement Tail Protects Retired Physicians
As a supplement to its core professional liability insurance, free retirement tail demonstrates ISMIE’s constant commitment to value-added services for its loyal policyholders. Physicians who retire at age 55 with five years of continuous ISMIE coverage are eligible; the same liability coverage is available to physicians of any age after 10 years of continuous ISMIE coverage.
Many physicians choose to stay active in medicine after retirement. Free tail coverage is available to retired physicians who meet the above criteria and who choose to:
- Provide health care without remuneration – e.g., volunteering at a free clinic.
- Work in an academic position where there is no patient care – e.g., department chair at a university.
- Work in an administrative capacity without patient contact – e.g., medical director of a nursing home.
- Hold a government position providing health care at state, local or national levels – e.g., reservist, Peace Corps, armed services.
- Return to a home country to practice – e.g., practiced in the U.S. for most of career, and then returned to home country to practice.
After two years a physician may return to practice without jeopardizing his or her retirement tail. However, if a physician returns to practice in Illinois or a bordering state within two years of retirement, he must reinstate the policy, or the tail will be voided. If the physician does not reinstate the policy upon return to practice, he or she must pay the applicable tail premium to maintain coverage.
ISMIE is pleased to offer this exceptional benefit to its insureds. For more information on retirement tail coverage, contact Underwriting Services at 1-800-782-4767.
