Do You Have Unpaid Claims from Treating Uninsured Patients for COVID-19?
July 25, 2023
The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) will open a two-month window for medical practices to submit unpaid claims from treating uninsured patients related to COVID-19. This will allow physicians a one-time opportunity to submit those claims for payment between Sept. 1, 2023, and Oct. 31, 2023.
This special window applies to claims of those uninsured patients for whom no Social Security Number (SSN) could be determined and, therefore, no recipient identification number (RIN) could be authorized through the COVID-19 Uninsured Portal.
HFS has developed a file format to identify unpaid COVID-19 services for the uninsured population, which includes that health professionals must attest that they performed due diligence in determining that the patient does not already possess an RIN, has no other insurance or no SSN.
Submit your claim information by sending HFS an email. All unpaid services must be provided in a single file submittal, with one provider number reported per file. Services must be related to COVID-19, such as testing, vaccine administration or medication treatment, and include a diagnosis code.
If you have questions, please contact the Bureau of Professional and Ancillary Services at 877-782-5565.
