COVID-19 Treatment Options for Home, Outpatient Settings

Several medications are available for treating patients with COVID-19 at home or in an outpatient setting. But in order for these treatments to be effective, they must be started within days after your patient first develops symptoms.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, four FDA authorized options are available for treating non-hospitalized patients who have COVID-19:

Several medications are available for treating patients with COVID-19 at home or in an outpatient setting. But in order for these treatments to be effective, they must be started within days after your patient first develops symptoms.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, four FDA authorized options are available for treating non-hospitalized patients who have COVID-19:
- Paxlovid – this medication is taken orally at home and treatment must begin within five days of the start of symptoms (for adults and children ages 12 years and older).
- Bebtelovimab – this therapy is given as a single intravenous (IV) injection and treatment must begin within seven days of the start of symptoms; it should be administered at an IV infusion site in which severe hypersensitivity reactions, such as anaphylaxis, can be managed (for adults and children ages 12 years and older).
- Remdesivir – this treatment requires IV infusions at a healthcare facility for three consecutive days and treatment must begin within seven days of the start of symptoms (for adults and children meeting certain criteria).
- Molnupiravir – this medication is taken orally at home and treatment must begin within five days of the start of symptoms (for adults ages 18 years and older).
These medications can lower the chance of progression to severe illness, hospitalization and death.
