New Federal Rule Related to Patient Access of Electronic Health Information

A new federal rule that takes effect on April 5, 2021, impacts individual physicians and physician groups who use electronic health records (EHRs). The rule pertains to “information blocking,” a term that describes obstructing access to information in an individual’s electronic health record.

Broadly speaking, the rule requires physicians to make patients’ electronic health information available on request without imposing restrictions, excessive delays or other deliberate interference.
