It’s Back to School Physical Time!

August 24, 2021

It’s hard to believe, but some children are already back in school and the rest will be heading there soon. If your patient population includes young students, you may be busy providing back-to-school school check-ups, signing school physical and sports forms, and administering the necessary vaccinations.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month. Doctors and their staffs are encouraged to emphasize awareness about the importance of vaccines.

In Illinois, all students entering, transferring or advancing into kindergarten through 12th grades must have two doses of mumps and two doses of rubella vaccine. Students entering, transferring, or advancing into kindergarten, 6th, or 9th grades must have two doses of varicella vaccine.

Adolescents from 12 to 17 years old are also eligible to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine with permission from their parents or guardians.

ISMIE offers a resource that provides guidance on how to handle requests from minors seeking treatment without the consent of their parents or guardians.

If you have patients whose families need help paying for childhood vaccines, inform parents about Illinois’ Vaccines For Children (VFC) program.
