About One-Third of Academic Physicians Ponder Quitting

January 16, 2024

Burnout and a lack of professional fulfillment appear to be some of the driving factors behind the contemplation of leaving the workforce for about a third of academic physicians, according to a recent study in JAMA Network Open.

Academic physicians practicing anesthesiology reported the highest intention to leave at 46.8% while physicians in nuclear medicine have the lowest rate at 13.6%. Other findings from the study include that women physicians are more likely to face burnout than men. And burnout is more prevalent among physicians 59 years of age and younger compared to physicians 60 and older.
