ISMIE Offers Key Risk Management Considerations for COVID-19 Vaccines

May 4, 2021

As the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines continues and supply is increasing, it’s important for physicians and other healthcare professionals to be aware of the rapidly evolving risk management considerations associated with this effort.

COVID-19 Vaccines: Guidance for Healthcare Professionals is a resource ISMIE provides to policyholders to help think about strategies for handling the administration of the COVID-19 vaccine in your practice from patient education to how to address vaccine hesitancy, among many other issues.

Recent good news from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) may help convince patients to get vaccinated. The CDC reported that the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines were highly effective among vaccinated older adults and helped keep them out of the hospital. The vaccines were 94% effective against COVID-19 hospitalizations among fully vaccinated adults and 64% effective among partially vaccinated adults 65 and older. The report does not include effectiveness data for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine because it was not part of this study.

COVID-19 hospitalizations among people 65 years of age and older have dropped 80% since the start of 2021 because of the vaccinations. Earlier in the pandemic, that age group accounted for the majority of deaths from COVID-19 in the United States.
