Illinois Advocacy Update

June 30, 2020

The 2020 spring legislative session was one of the most unusual sessions in recent memory. Our friends at the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) were building bi-partisan momentum to streamline burdensome prior authorization requirements when the public health emergency brought the legislative session to an early halt.

But ISMS lost no time:
  • Instead of spending this Legislative Spring Session advocating for or against legislation, ISMS successfully worked with Governor Pritzker’s office in the drafting of many important executive orders, including civil liability protections and increased access to telehealth. The civil liability protection measure was not extended in the most recent executive orders, however telehealth parity was kept in place for at least another month.
  • ISMS successfully communicated physicians’ concerns to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) regarding efforts by allied healthcare professionals to inappropriately expand their scope of practice during the pandemic.
  • During the four-day special legislative session, ISMS defeated a bill that would have allowed insurance carriers to inappropriately limit physician reimbursement for telehealth services.

For a complete wrap-up of what ISMS’ legislative team achieved for Illinois physicians, access the 2020 ISMS Legislative Report.
