New from ISMIE: Identifying and Addressing Elder Abuse

May is Older Americans Month, a time to honor the contributions that seniors have made to their communities. Unfortunately, not all seniors are well-respected as about one in 10 suffer from some form of abuse each year, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
ISMIE offers a new resource, Elder Abuse, that can help you identify the processes in place at your practice that support how best to help patients who may be victims of elder abuse. The article offers strategies on your interactions with the patients and their caregivers and many additional resources.
It’s likely that healthcare professionals are interacting with patients who are in harmful and unsafe situations that can impact their health. Identifying and helping these victims can be difficult and complex, but it’s important to know the common signs displayed by elderly patients in abusive situations and to understand the reporting requirements of the state in which you practice.
