Federal & State Reporting

ISMIE Mutual, like all professional liability insurance companies, is required by law to report indemnity payments to state and federal agencies. If an indemnity payment is made on your behalf, whether by settlement or by verdict, mandatory reports will be submitted to the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) as well as the appropriate state licensing board in which the claim occurred. As your medical liability insurer, we understand that settlement of a medical liability claim may occur for a variety of reasons that do not necessarily reflect negatively on the policyholder's professional competence or conduct. We realize that a settlement payment should never be construed as a presumption that medical negligence has occurred

However, as a reporting entity, we must provide an accurate description of the acts or omissions and injuries or illnesses upon which the medical liability action or alleged claims was based. Another unique aspect of being insured with ISMIE is that we allow our policyholders to see a working copy of the report before we submit the final report to the NPDB or appropriate state agency. While we are mandated by law to report, we want you to feel comfortable with the accuracy of the information being submitted.
