Heart Disease Remains Leading Cause of Death in the Country
February 11, 2025
Cardiovascular disease claims more lives in the United States than all forms of cancer and accidental deaths – the number two and three causes of death – combined, according to the American Heart Association’s (AHA) 2025 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics.
The report showed that several heart disease risk factors continue to rise, with nearly 47% of American adults living with hypertension and more than half, 57%, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.
Additionally, 72% of U.S. adults have an unhealthy weight, with nearly 42% of adults diagnosed with obesity, which also is a risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease.
Cardiology specialists play a critical role when it comes to providing safe, high-quality patient care. Because the scope of practice can range from ambulatory office visits to high-risk procedures, it’s essential for cardiologists and healthcare professionals who support them to stay up to date on current standards of care.
ISMIE offers risk tips focused on cardiology that will help policyholders reduce risk and improve patient outcomes when treating individuals with cardiovascular disease.
