Unprofessional behavior in any workplace can have a negative effect on productivity, morale and the ability to achieve performance goals. This is especially true for the healthcare setting in which the stakes – particularly for patient safety – are indisputably high.
The Joint Commission issued a leadership standard to address unprofessional and inappropriate behaviors stating that such conduct can “foster medical errors, contribute to poor patient satisfaction and to preventable adverse outcomes, increase the cost of care, and cause qualified clinicians, administrators and managers to seek new positions in more professional environments.”
